Kitesurfing is an exciting water sport that combines surfing and traction sailing, and can be practised at any age given the right conditions and supervision. Here’s everything you need to know to get started safely and assess your level of autonomy.
At what age can you start kitesurfing ?
Kitesurfing is accessible to children from the age of 10, although the ideal age to start is generally between 12 and 14. At this age, children often have the recommended minimum weight of 40kg, which is crucial when choosing kite size. Before starting, children should be able to swim.
Criteria for starting :
- Recommended age : 10 to 14 years
- Minimum weight : 40 kg
- Knowing how to swim : YES
- Safety equipment : Helmet, life jacket, wetsuit depending on the season
Are you ready to kitesurf alone?
If you’ve already taken a kitesurfing course or lessons, it’s important to check your autonomy before practising on your own. Here’s a self-assessment questionnaire to help you:
- Can I analyse a kitesurfing spot?
- Can I assemble my equipment safely on my own?
- Am I aware of all the safety systems on my sail and do they work?
- Can I take off and land my glider safely?
- Am I capable of tacking upwind?
Results :
- If the majority of your answers is “yes” : You are ready to practice on your own.
- If you need additional lessons : Take a look at our advanced training packages.
What do you need to know about kitesurfing in winter?
Kitesurfing in winter presents particular challenges, but with the right precautions it can be extremely rewarding.
Weather and choice of spot :
- Do not sail if the temperature is below 5°C without suitable equipment.
- Avoid spots with strong currents, especially in winter.
- Choose a stable wind and a favourable weather forecast (cloud cover, no showers).
Equipment and clothing :
- Use well-maintained equipment: rinse with fresh water, dry properly.
- Wear booties, gloves and a neoprene balaclava.
- A dry suit is ideal for very cold weather.
Practical advice :
- Eat a good meal rich in proteins and slow sugars before sailing.
- Don’t go sailing alone.
- Get out of the water before sunset.
- Prepare a thermos of tea to warm up after your session.
By following these recommendations, you can enjoy kitesurfing in complete safety, even in winter.
Happy surfing, and stay safe!
