The Downwinds

What about safety on the water?

To ensure your safety on the water, we take strict measures so that your experience remains worry-free and enjoyable.

Every morning after breakfast, we hold a detailed briefing about the day’s section, highlighting any particularities and potential hazards like reefs.

Our group will be accompanied by several guides on the water, while on land, off-road 4×4 vehicles will stay in radio contact with the guides. We want you to fully enjoy your downwind without having to worry about anything else but kitesurfing. We take care of everything else!

What skill level is required for a downwind?

First of all, it’s important to note that a downwind is not suitable for absolute beginners! You need prior experience in kitesurfing in open sea and small waves. Depending on the spots and conditions, waves in northeastern Brazil can range from 50 cm to 2.5 m high.

You must be able to relaunch your kite, master upwind body dragging, and have self-rescue in your skillset. Since we’ll be doing 4 downwinds of 20 to 30 km each, a good basic level of physical fitness is essential.

Of course, participants can join the support vehicle at any time if they wish. If you ride regular (left foot forward), you’ll need to get used to riding switch or toeside, as the wind mainly comes from the sea and sideways (side-onshore).

FAQ Downwind

What is a downwind?

A downwind involves riding from point A to point B, going downwind. You’ll return to the beach only for meals and rest 😉

What level is required?

It’s important to be able to ride and master upwind body dragging. You should also handle waves confidently and be able to relaunch your kite quickly. Knowing self-rescue techniques is a valuable asset.

What safety precautions are taken?

Our experienced team ensures your safety throughout the downwind. We accompany you on the water and stay in radio contact with the 4×4 vehicle drivers. A team member is trained in first aid.

How are reefs and other hazards managed?

Every morning after breakfast, we conduct a detailed briefing about the day’s itinerary. We’ll inform you about dangerous zones, including reefs, which will also be marked at sea.

How many kilometers do we cover during a downwind?

The distance varies between 20 and 40 kilometers, depending on the section of the route.

What if I can’t keep up?

You can hop in one of the support vehicles on the beach at any time if needed.

What about food during the downwind?

Breaks are planned in the morning and afternoon with snacks (water, juice, fruits).

What kite sizes should I bring for a downwind in Brazil?

We recommend bringing at least two or three kites depending on your weight:

  • 55–65 kg: 6–9m² or 6–8–10m²
  • 65–75 kg: 7–10m² or 7–9–12m²
  • 75–85 kg: 8–10m² or 8–10–12m²
  • +85 kg: 9–12m² or 9–12–15m²

Do I need to bring my pump?

It’s not mandatory, but recommended. At least bring an adapter for your valve if it’s a special type.

Twintip or Surf – which board should I choose?

Choose the board you are most comfortable with. You can also bring both if you want — there’s enough space.

What accessories should I bring?

Make sure to bring waterproof sunscreen. We also recommend a surf hat, water sports sunglasses, and possibly gloves. Downwind pros often carry a camel bag.

What’s the best time of year for kitesurfing in Brazil?

The best period for kitesurfing in Brazil is from late July to mid-January, with a peak season in October and November. It’s the perfect time of year to head to Brazil!
