What About Safety on the Water ?

To ensure your safety on the water, we take strict measures so your experience remains completely worry-free.

Each morning after breakfast, a detailed briefing is held on the day’s route, highlighting key features and any potential hazards such as reefs.

Our group will be accompanied by several guides on the water, while 4×4 support vehicles on the beach remain in radio contact with them. We want you to fully enjoy your downwind without worrying about anything other than kitesurfing. We take care of everything else!

What level is required for a downwind ?

First of all, it is important to note that a downwind is not suitable for absolute beginners! You must have prior kitesurfing experience in open sea conditions and small waves. Depending on the spot and conditions, waves in northeastern Brazil can range from 50 cm to 2.5 m in height.

You must be able to relaunch your kite, master upwind body dragging, and be comfortable with self-rescue techniques. As we will complete 4 downwinds of 20 to 30 km each, a good basic level of fitness is essential.

Of course, participants can join the support vehicle at any time if they wish. If you ride regular (left foot forward), you will need to be comfortable riding switch or toeside, as the wind mainly comes from the sea at a side-onshore angle.

Downwind FAQ

What is a downwind ?

A downwind consists of riding from point A to point B, following the wind along the coastline.

What level is required ?

It is important to be able to ride confidently and master upwind body dragging. You should also be comfortable handling waves and relaunching your kite quickly. Knowledge of self-rescue techniques is also highly valuable.

What safety precautions are in place ?

Our experienced team ensures your safety throughout the entire downwind. We accompany you on the water and remain in radio contact with the 4×4 support drivers. A member of the team is trained in first aid.

How are reefs and other hazards managed ?

Each morning after breakfast, a detailed briefing is given on the day’s route. We will inform you about dangerous areas, including reefs, which will also be clearly identified on the water.

How many kilometers do we cover during a downwind ?

The distance may vary between 20 and 40 kilometers depending on the route section.

What if I can't keep up?

You can join one of the support vehicles on the beach at any time if needed.

What about food during the downwind ?

Breaks are planned in the morning and afternoon with snacks (water, fruit juice, and fruit).

What kite sizes should I bring for a downwind in Brazil ?

We recommend bringing at least two or three kites depending on your weight :

  • 55-65 kg : 6-9m² ou 6-8-10m²
  • 65-75 kg : 7-10m² ou 7-9-12m²
  • 75-85 kg : 8-10m² ou 8-10-12m²
  • +85 kg : 9-12m² ou 9-12-15m²

Should I bring my pump ?

It is not mandatory, but recommended. Bringing at least the adapter for your valve is important if it is an uncommon one.

Twintip or Surf – which board should I choose ?

Choose the board you feel most comfortable riding. You may also bring both if you wish, as there is plenty of space.

Which accessories should I bring ?

Make sure to bring waterproof sunscreen. We also recommend a surf hat, sunglasses suitable for watersports, and possibly gloves. Experienced downwind riders often bring a camel bag.

What is the best time for kitesurfing in Brazil ?

The best period for kitesurfing in Brazil runs from late July to mid-January, with peak season in October and November. This is therefore the best time of the year to head to Brazil !
